With a rich variety in topography comes a variety in the flora and fauna of the region. India is one such country that is blessed with both. To put it down in facts and figures, about 1180 species of birds, 30000 species of insects, 350 species of mammals, over 15000 species of plants and 515 wildlife sanctuaries find their home in India. But don’t let these numbers intimidate you. I know it’s overwhelming but hey, isn’t that the purpose of this blog? To make it easier for you I have made a list of the top 5 wildlife sanctuaries that are here in India so you can get a head start on discovering wild animals in their natural habitat.

Kaziranga National Park, Assam

Located in the Golaghat and Nagaon district in Assam, Kaziranga National Park has earned the reputation all across the globe for conserving the most endangered species of wild animals. In the year 1985, Kaziranga was declared to be a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Spread over an area of 858sq.km, the park is home to over 2/3rd of the world’s total one-horned rhino population. Kaziranga was also declared as a tiger reserve in the year 2006. You can also find many other animals like the Indian Gaur, swamp deer, wild water buffalo, leopards and golden jackals to name a few.

Best time to visit: November — April

Ranthambore National Park, Rajasthan

Located in the Sawai Madhopur district of Rajasthan, this park that covers an area of around 400sq.km is one of the many marvelous sites that Rajasthan has to offer. Ranthambore was established in the year 1980 with its main focus being protecting endangered tigers. The park is surrounded by the rivers Chambal and Banas; this unique combination of nature and wildlife is what makes Ranthambore so special. The hill junctions of Vindhya and Aravalli are some of the best sites to watch animals from. Ranthambore not only has Indian tourists but also tourists from all across the globe paying a visit.

Best time to visit: October — June

Jim Corbett National Park, Uttarakhand

Though earlier named as Ramganga National Park, it was established in 1936. It was only in the year 1956 that the park was renamed to Jim Corbett National Park after the famous writer and hunter Jim Corbett. The park that is spread over an area of around 521sq.km is also the oldest wildlife sanctuary in India. Along with the day and night jeep safaris, you can also stay overnight here at the park. The sambhar deer, king cobra, nilgai, wild boar, chital, flying fox, ghariyal are some of the wild animals you can spot here. The park welcomes more than 70,000 visitors every year.

Sundarbans National Park, West Bengal

Something apart from the wildlife present here that makes this park unique is the fact that Sundarbans National Park is spread across two countries India and Bangladesh. Due to the dense mangrove forests that are found here, Sundarbans is declared to be a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It offers a variety of almost 64 mangrove species which include Sundari, Genwa and Garjan. The park has an estimated population of 400 Bengal tigers which is one of the highest. You can find animals like giant lizards, wild boar, crocodiles, king crabs, turtles and jungle fowl to name a few.

Best time to visit: September — March

Bandhavgarh National Park, Madhya Pradesh

One of the best places to enjoy the beauty of nature and spot varied wild animals, Bandhavgarh National Park is located in the central part of India in the state of Madhya Pradesh. Along with the usual jeep safaris, Bandhavgarh offers animal safaris that allow you to have a closer look at these wild animals in their natural habitats. It is a life changing experience to observe these wild animals up close. The royal Bengal tiger, chinkara, white tigers, sambhar, gray mongoose, gaur, sloth bear, deer, jungle cat, leopard are a few of the splendid and wild creatures you will find here.
