Have you ever wondered what happens after death? Is that the end or is there something much more beyond what you and I can understand or see? As I am writing about this, I realize that all our beliefs are very subjective and differ from person to person. Ghosts and paranormal activities are all very personal topics and the answer to the question “Whether ghosts exist or not” is all about your individualistic opinion. But if you are someone who finds horror stories interesting or loves delving deep and finding out more about the supernatural, then this is just the article for you. I have listed down 4 of the most haunted places in India which will catch the attention of the adrenaline junkie in you, so keep on reading to find out what places have made it on my radar.

Bhangarh Fort, Rajasthan

This fort in the abandoned town of Bhangarh, in the state of Rajasthan, is considered to be one of the most haunted places in all of India. The stories of this fort have been told and heard everywhere to the extent that the Government of India has banned entry into the fort post-sunset and before sunrise. Even the Archaeological Society of India has put up warning signboards that tell tourists to no be in the vicinity of the fort post-sunset. If 16th-century legends are to be believed then it so happened that a “tantric” by the name of Singhia fell in love with the Princess of Bhangarh, Ratnavati. In the process of trying to win her over with his magic, he was killed as the Princess found out about his wicked scheme. Before he took his last breath, he cursed the residents of the fort of Bhangarh to die and the villagers to have no roof over their heads. To this day, if a roof is built here, it collapses soon after.

Dumas Beach, Gujarat

This beach is located roughly around 13 miles down southwest of Surat and is one of the most haunted beaches in India. As gorgeous and scenic as this beach may seem, many agree that there is a weird and spooky vibe to this beach. It is believed that the black sand of this beach is evidence of the fact that the beach is indeed haunted. Legends say that his beach was used as a cremation ground by the Hindus and thus, the souls that didn’t find salvation walk the shores of this beach at midnight. There is a possibility that the black sand is a result of the remnants of the people that were cremated here. To this day, tourists and locals have reported paranormal activities on the beach. People can hear laughter and weird spooky sounds on the beach post-sunset. To add to this, dogs exhibit strange behaviour and start howling and barking showing their discomfort or as a warning sign.

Shaniwar Wada, Pune

Shaniwar Wada, being the architectural wonder that it is, is also home to quite a few eery events. This place was home to the Peshwas who were the monarchs of the Maratha Empire. If all the ghostly fables are to be believed, then it is said that the fort is haunted by the ghost of the fifth Peshwa called Narayanrao, who was killed here in the year 1773 on the command of his uncle Raghunathrao and aunt Anandibai. In an attempt to save his life, the young Peshwa escaped from his chamber and ran to his uncle pleading to save his life. It is said that after sunset, one can hear Narayanrao’s cry for help. One can hear him, especially on a full moon night, pleading to be saved in Marathi, saying, “Kaka mala vachva” which translates to ‘Uncle save me’. In 1828, a huge fire broke and destroyed a portion of the fort but the remains are still open to tourists for sightseeing.

Kuldhara Village, Rajasthan

Located near Jaisalmer, the village of Kuldhara was the residence of Paliwal Brahmins. In the year 1825, all the villagers of Kuldhara and the surrounding 83 villages vanished into thin air leaving no trace of their disappearance. As the folk tale goes, it is said that the head of state fell in love with a girl from the village of Kuldhara and wanted to get married to her. He threatened all the villagers with asking for huge amounts as tax if she was not married to him. In order to protect the girl, the Chief of the village of Kuldhara and other nearby villages abandoned their homes in unison and cursed the village to remain unoccupied till the end of time.
